Poems from Late Harvest
Echoes of an Era
The band is putting away the instruments,
invited guests have gone home except
those who can’t let go of what was,
me too, observing busy people
with purpose taking down decorations,
clearing tables, sweeping the floor.
I try to remember what it felt like
to be alive, not just breathing
but breathless with activity,
anticipation, achievements,
days — structured, demanding,
always too short.
I am a child of the miracle century,
follower of the true faith–longevity–
salvation spanning endless years,
spawning empty hours tinged with
sadness, as it turns out,
many tinged with sadness, confusion,
a body that seems only vaguely familiar
children disinterested but devout.
Loss is the constant of time,
leaving behind parents, siblings,
best friends, then the most loved.
Familiar faces–not just people,
covers on magazines,
names on marquees
signal I have outlived my era.
